Radiohead Enters Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League
Epic Games subscribers were probably surprised to find the Kid A Mnesiac Exhibition app among the featured games on Epic Store. But this virtual experience of music and vision by Radiohead was not the only collaboration between the gaming giant and the rock stars. Radiohead makes an appearance in at least three big titles on Epic Store.
There is no surprise that the band appears in Fortnite: The Island like the ultimate resort attracts all the celebrities, both real and fictional, then why not Radiohead? The difference is that it’s no cosmetic item. Instead, Radiohead features a song and a custom loading screen. Not much, especially when you compare it to, say, Naruto’s presence, so obvious this time.
Just as little Radiohead offers for Rocket League players. In fact, it’s just a flag for your team that you can select along with national or fictional ones. Quite modest for a band like Radiohead. If you expected some theme costumes, though, you need to check it in Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. Here you can dress your bean-like character in a special suit. Like all suits, it consists of two parts and imitates the Minotaur-like monster from the cover of Amnesiac.
At the end of the day, though, Radiohead is way more loved for its music than for its visual symbols, so showing off their love for the band is not as popular as, say, skins inspired by John Wick or T-800. It’s rather an insider joke for Radiohead fans which form the audience of all these in-game guest appearances. For many, it’s hard to imagine someone starts listening to Radiohead after seeing a Fortnite screen or a Fall Guys skin. On the other hand, if a band like this wants a place in the gaming industry, it deserves it.
